Shūgō (守護)

Shūgō (守護) in Pure Land Buddhism, specifically within the Jōdo Shinshū branch, refers to "protection" or "guardianship." It signifies the protection and guidance offered by Amida Buddha and his Pure Land (Sukhāvatī) to those who have faith in him. This concept is central to the Pure Land understanding of salvation, where reliance on the power of Amida and his vow is seen as the primary means of attaining rebirth in the Pure Land.
Jōdo Shinshū and Shūgō:
In Jōdo Shinshū, a key branch of Pure Land Buddhism, Shūgō is understood within the context of faith in Amida Buddha's vow and the merit he has accumulated through his practice.
Faith as the Basis:
Shūgō is not seen as something earned through personal effort, but rather as a gift offered by Amida based on the individual's faith in his power and compassion.
Importance in Practice:
The concept of Shūgō is central to the Pure Land practice of the Nembutsu, which is the recitation of the name of Amida Buddha. This recitation is seen as a way to invoke his protection and guidance, ultimately leading to rebirth in the Pure Land.
